At the fountain by AsjJohnson At the fountain by AsjJohnson
Everyone has done things they’re not proud of. I disrespect my father. I don’t listen to him, and twist his words to get my way. And the worst part is, I keep doing it... no matter how much I love him, or tell myself I won’t do it again.

I can never do enough good to make up for that.

It’s a modified quote from a far off future scene I’d thought of for my “Shoes” fanfic (or, more like a sequel to it, if I make one). I thought it would make a good basis for a father’s day themed picture for :icondisney-club:'s Father's Day contest.

I thought I’d draw Jasmine and the Sultan sitting together. Jasmine isn’t the nicest to her father in the Aladdin movie and series. She can outright refuse to obey him, like when she drives out the suitors in the movie and causes him to worry about her future, and when she sneaks off to save Aladdin in the episode “The Secret of Dagger Rock” against her father’s direct orders. Other times, she can ask him for something, and while he’s hesitating or trying to say no in a way that won’t break her heart, she’ll thank him and run off, acting as though he had agreed (and he‘s just too nice to say no after that). But, Jasmine cares for her father, and I think she probably feels bad for treating him the way she does. She might feel it’s her worst sin.
I wasn’t sure where to put them (or, what to have in the bg) at first, but there’s enough room for both of them at the rim of the fountain, and besides that, the first time she is seen disobeying her father is at the fountain (as well as the first time she’s seen at all...). So, it kind of makes sense to show her being nice to him there. (it was also kind of fun thinking up what things I should add to the bg (though I did use reference from the movie for the fountain, which did have fish and lily pads), though I also avoided working on the bg a bit. ...I ended up having another Aladdin fic idea and took a break to work on it some and to make a sketch related to it: [link] ...I probably shouldn’t have done it. I rushed on the finishing touches on the bg. Maybe after the contest, I’ll fix it up a bit more.)
...he's supposed to be giving her a proud/happy look as he pats her hand. Though, he's always proud of her, even when she does disobey him. (I might should have slanted his eyes a bit more. It did look like his eyes slant a bit, like his daughter's)
(oh, I forgot to mention, first time drawing the Sultan. ^_^ I think it's the second third time drawing Jasmine. I was a little looser with her this time, which I think turned out better than my first picture of her.)

...I also had an idea for a picture of Don Diego and Don Alejandro, from Disney's Zorro, but I ended up taking too long to start on this picture to do that one. ^_^"
(also, did you notice the cute little fish that stopped beside Jasmine? I drew the fish with yellow eyes, like I saw for photos of goldfish I'd found online (though I couldn't seem to find a type of fish that had white fins that looked like the ones in the movie), but you can't really see their irises with the picture at this size. I might upload some close-up shots later, if I think people would be interested.)

thanks. ^_^ I was going to do more with the background, but I ran out of time (and I usually don't go back to finish pictures later). I was going to add some color to the streams of water (from reflections) and maybe distort the image behind the water, add flowers to some of the lily pads, and maybe just add a little more shading here and there. ...It's the fish's fault. Maybe. I really liked playing with the fish.

You're very welcome! What you did with it till now is already amazing though :O and I think not finishing pictures later is actually a very good trait too, because that means you keep on going further in your projects, and that's the best way to improve :) Not hanging on past works and suchies, I tend to do that ^^;

Well, if I hadn't submitted it to dA, I probably would've either taken my time and did more, or else halfway started over at some point and did more with it. And I think it's more of a contest related thing. I tend to wait until the last few days to start an entry, and then I rush to do some stuff at the end, and I think, "I'll fix it after the contest," but I never feel like it because it was annoying to work on right before the deadline. But for pictures that I want to look really good, which have no deadline, I can spend months toying with (in-between avoiding working on).
But I probably should do things faster. I guess... I hate looking back at older pictures and seeing obvious things that are off, so I want to spend as much time as I can to catch those things before I submit the pictures. But after I submit something, it can be like sealing it off. As long as I don't submit it, I can keep playing with it. The pic my avatar is from is like that, where I keep playing with it, in-between avoiding working on it. I'd made a bg for it based on a scene from the movie, but I think I'll probably redraw it (...again) next time I'm playing with it (partly because I'd finally found a screenshot or two from an angle that I hadn't been able to find earlier, and partly because the lighting doesn't quite work).

The background work really stands out on this one, and I love the drawing itself <3 Jasmine looks very cat-like here, as in fact, she is, in general. She has this kind of inherent independence, which not many people manage to capture in drawing :) Good job!

Thanks. ^_^
When I was looking at screenshots of the Sultan, it looked like his eyes had a bit of a slant to them, maybe a little like Jasmine's, when he doesn't have them wide open in the movie, but I tend to not make slanted lines slanted enough for the most part. I think I might've given Jasmine's eyes a bit more slant because I remembered about that odd quality when I'd tried drawing her before (ack. I'd said in the description that I'd drawn her once before, but I just remembered a failed screenshot copying attempt, so that would make twice. ...I think...)

I like how the fish came out, too. They're actually pretty simple, but I think they look pretty good despite just being little red-orange raindrops with white drawn around them. I have mixed feelings about the water, though. I meant to add a few other colors reflecting off of the falling water and distort the bg behind the streams somehow, but ended up deciding to wait on that and didn't get back to it, and I might should've had more contrast between the reflection in the pool and the see-through part in the front.
...I probably spent the most time (out of the time used on the bg) on the peacocks in the center of the fountain, since I did those first, and I didn't even draw their heads. ^_^"

Well, the fish look very realistic for only being simple! :D
Nah, I really like how you colored the ripples from the streams and the orange reflection from the center, too.
Yes, the peacocks [I would honestly have never guessed that's what they were if you didn't say so. They look like a kind of pattern in the stone, rather.] are colored very realistically and beautifully, too!

Well, at least I think that's what they are. I didn't remember what the base of the fountain looked like, and found this online [link] so I used it for reference.
