What is Time?

What is time?

Is it a line someone can move back and forth on?
Can travel backward on the line when remembering,
Travel forward when thinking of the future?

I remember when I was a little girl;
My mother and father together,
My brother being my best friend.

I can imagine what I want my future to be;
I want a good career, a house, and a car,
Enough time for all of my hobbies.

Is it a force, ever shoving a person on?
Pushing us forward and not letting us come back,
Never letting us choose where we want to be?

On my hard drive, I see unfinished files from last year;
I remember them as though it was yesterday,
And I wonder how time could have gone by so quickly.

Sometimes I wish for the simplicity of my youth,
Other times I wish for future free time that lasts long enough,
But it never works that way and only time knows why.

Is it a figment of human imagination, not to be depended on?
Not being, has been, or ever will be a past or future,
The present being the only thing to exist?

I can only live in this everlasting second in time,
Which everyone else lives in, yet doesn’t realize,
And everything before or after this second is no longer real.

Memory can’t remember every detail,
Daydreaming can’t predict the actual future,
And only the present is here... forever.

Is it all of these things and more, the explanations going on and on?
An imaginary, shoving force that can only be defied by mind,
The one thing that has invented it and can destroy it?

I can only do what I can do,
Since time only allots me so much time,
To get things done that I want to get done.

Maybe I can only live in the present,
But I can learn from the past,
In order to make a better future.
